This is my current code, it is functional but slow, as it downloads the torrent conten Stack Overflow. This still downloads the files until the metadata is retrieved, however, so I just saved them to a temporary directory.

Functionally there is NO difference between the magnet link and the "get torrent file" link. One gets the torrent metadata from the swarm, the other comes in a file. The latter will always work, when it is available. It is available for smaller swarm because sometimes it is difficult to connect to a peer that can reliably deliver the metadata.
